Why Do We Celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi
GANESH CHATURTHI
Long Back Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati Lived in Kailash for Years. One day Goddess Parvati wanted to take a bath but no one was there to guard her. Then she Created an idol of a boy using Turmeric an infused, life into him. She asked her son to not let anyone enter the house while she was taking bath. Meanwhile, Lord Shiva returned home but the boy wouldn't let him in. Angered by the adamant boy lord Shiva sheared off his head with the help of his 'Trishul'. The moment goddess Parvati saw this she got furious and ordered lord Shiva to bring the boy back to his life.
The lord Brahma advised lord Shiva to replace the head of the boy with any of the creature head who was sleeping with its head facing towards the north. Ultimately, the boy's head was replaced by the head of an elephant and from then he was called Ganapati or Ganesha. Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of Lord Ganesha and is celebrated with Great pomp and Devotion.
It is also said that we should not look at the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi. There is a story behind this. One day it was lord Ganesha's Birthday and he was invited to a supper at a devotee's house. Lord Ganesha had a very heavy meal. After having the meal, he returned to the house on his mouse. On the way, a snake crossed their path. After the mouse saw the snake it got very Frightened and started to run very fast and due to this Lord Ganesha felt down. When Ganesh fell down his stomach which was very full Burst open. And seeing Lord Ganesha in this manner the moon started Laughing heartily. Lord Ganesha felt Very insulted and in anger, he killed the snake and tied it around his stomach and then chased the moon.
The moon ran very fast to save his life and it managed to escape from Lord Ganesh. He hid in his palace. Lord Ganesha soon reached the palace and stood guard outside and said the moon where will you go now; you have to come out soon or later and then I will take my revenge. Suddenly it became very dark and the moon refused to come outside. It created a lot of chaos on Earth. The Gods went to Lord Ganesh and told him to free the Moon and finally lord Ganesh Agreed, he let the moonshine but he cursed the moon saying that you hid in your palace-like thief and therefore anybody who sees you on my Birthday will be called a thief. This is the reason why it is advised not to see the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi.
